It takes courage to turn your back on rewarding salaried positions of managing director at two great foodservice equipment brands, and strike out alone. But Andrew Jones is a man who has done precisely that. From 2000-2011, he spent 4 successful years as managing director at Rational, followed by another 7 years heading Electrolux Professional. But when the opportunity came up to buy the well-established Bill Ibbot Catering Equipment Services business 4 years ago, he did not hesitate to take the plunge.
The Cambridge-based distributor was turning over around £500,000 in the year before Andrew took control in 2011. That has now increased five-fold to £2.5m thanks mainly to converting service contracts into new business projects with existing clients. Most are in the public sector, including 42 schools in the Cambridge area, as well as NHS and military installations.
The company’s proximity to Cambridge made it the natural choice for the city’s universities, where BI Services recently completed a project at the Churchill College’s Moller Centre conference facility.
As well as bringing his own experience to BI Services, Andrew is also recruiting and training a new generation of experts. An apprentice he took on 2 years ago is now almost fully trained, and a second apprentice is being sought as the business continues its expansion.
