Picture the scene around the Currie family dinner table 10 years ago. Dennis, founder of JD Catering Supplies, turns to his son Jason to discuss him joining the business. “You’ll start at the bottom doing the deliveries and cleaning,” Jason is told. Jason readily agrees, and seizes the opportunity with both hands. Around the boardroom table, where Jason today sits as a director of the company, he recalls the single most important piece of business advice he heard from his father: “In business, if you stand still you die.”
Standing still is not in Jason’s DNA. After joining Northern Ireland’s biggest used catering supplies distributor in 2005, he rapidly developed into a modernising showroom manager that has helped the company grow tenfold in the past decade.
Other new initiatives have followed, including a cash and carry and the creation of a new retail arm called Posh & Pans that the Curries hope will grow rapidly. Next on the agenda is the formation of a ‘click and collect’ service in Belfast and Dublin that the company says will be the first of its kind in Ireland.
The core business of commercial equipment distribution has not been ignored, and the company is now the biggest seller of both Lincat and Maidiad in Ireland, and even has plans to expand into the rest of the UK in the next 15 months.
