Lee Vines has shaken up the catering equipment market this year, as he headed up the team at PKL which created a model that could release the potential of catering equipment provision for smaller and independent caterers, among other operators.
Lee and his colleagues achieved this through the development of U-Select, a unique range of five finance options that help businesses procure new equipment without a large capital spend. One offer Try it, Buy it allows businesses to try new catering equipment for a 12 month hire period before committing to purchase, sending it back or carrying on with the hire, and has lowered the entry point to the market for new businesses and encouraged existing businesses to expand, relatively risk free.
The departure from the standard operating model for PKL was a step into the unknown for the 28-year old company, but it has paid dividends: U-Select is on-course to turn over £1m in its first year of operation.
Lee has driven not only the development of the concept, but also the launch of the brand and overseen its first few months, shepherding it to profit and bringing it to sustainability ahead of schedule.
Becoming MD of the PKL Group last year, Lee was given the brief of driving the business forward, both through existing products and new markets. He has overseen the development of PKL KitchenPods from conception to over 300 installations in the last 5 years, many of which have helped schools with the delivery of UIFSM.
Lee has also focused on the expansion of the PKL product range over the last 12 months, developing PKLs Food Cube mobile kitchen solution outside the education sector and adding the Space Station modular servery to the companys product range, both of which are proving highly popular in the leisure and hospitality sectors.
