In April this year, the catering equipment industry was collectively surprised to learn that catering equipment giant, Nisbets, bought a controlling stake in the well-known Space Catering Group. But this move was actually something that Nisbets’ MD, Paul McMahon, had been discussing with Space’s founder Mike Mellor since last summer.
The acquisition moves Nisbets into the hitherto unexplored area of design and installation, which Paul believes can only benefit both companies. Alongside Space MD, Ian Bidmead, he will now be leading the charge to enable both companies’ sales teams to gradually work closer together and ramp Space’s business up.
Even more impressively, Paul has overseen an incredible growth period at Nisbets. Posting yet another record turnover of £255.3m for the year ending 31 December 2015, this represents a 12.6% increase on its 2014 performance, which in itself smashed the £200m turnover barrier and was a 16.6% increase on the previous year.
Paul’s dynamism shows no signs of stopping, and with 9,000 parcels shipped by Nisbets every day, he makes sure that the firm is still very much focused on customer service.
Currently he is managing a further expansion of Nisbets warehousing at one of its two facilities in Bristol. The new 55,000ft2 extension is to be further complemented by the purchase of a third Bristol building, which will add an extra 65,000ft2 of warehousing and 16,000ft2 of office space to the group.
He has told the industry that it can expect ‘more of the same’ from Nisbets. But when the standard is 11% annual growth on £255.3m turnover, this means adding over £28m extra turnover every year. It’s a total which really marks Paul out as a market leader in this business.
